Linked vs. Standalone Notes

Created by Helium Support, Modified on Mon, 16 Mar at 11:16 AM by Helium Support

Notes in Helium can exist on their own or be linked to an Assignment, Event, or Resource. Understanding the difference helps you stay organized and find them later.

Linked Notes

A linked note is attached to an Assignment, Event, or Resource. These are auto-created for you anytime you use the smaller "Notes" area when editing one of these items. To specifically create one with a link:

  1. Open an Assignment, Event, or Resource
  2. Scroll down to the Notes section
  3. Click "Open in Notebook"

Linked notes display a badge showing what they're connected to, making it easy to see the relationship at a glance.

Standalone Notes

A standalone note isn't attached to anything—you can think of these more as general documents, from taking more broader notes, jotting down your thoughts, or drafting a paper or project. Create one by opening the Notebook and tapping the "+" button.

Why Can't I See My Notes?

The Notebook has filters that may hide some notes. If you're missing a note:

  • Check your filters: Tap the filter icon and make sure the relevant type (Assignments, Events, Resources, or Unlinked) is selected.
  • Search by title: Use the search bar to find notes by title or by the name of the linked item.

If you have "Remember filter state" enabled in Settings, your filters persist between sessions—so a filter you set last week might still be active.

Can I Unlink a Note?

No. If you created a note linked to an item and want it standalone, you'll need to create a new standalone note and copy the content over.
